Church roofs can be ornately decorated panels or are a plain timber structure, but they are essential in the overall balance of lighting to give a sense of overall scale to the interior design. Hence, they should always be considered as part of a church interior lighting scheme.

They rarely require a great quantity of light, but gently highlighting them is usually sufficient unless there are detailed bosses to feature.

If long life fixtures are used, lighting the roof space from the clerestory windows works well.

Where churches still have chancel screens, they are often fine decorated and will benefit from unobtrusive feature lighting – often from below or at the side, so that the source of the lighting is hidden from immediate view

Dimmed to a low level, they look wonderful during concerts, recitals and Christingle Services, while ensuring a level of safety for members of the congregation to leave their seats.

Easy access for maintenance by members of the congregation

The choice of style is important to be attuned to the interior style of the church.

An alternative to groups of spotlights at wall plate level, with their associated access concerns.
